Mindy Kaling on why she wore 2 Vera Wang dresses to the Oscars: 'When I love a piece of clothing, I buy it in every color'
Mindy Kaling had us seeing double at the 2023 Oscars.
The Mindy Project creator and star took on the champagne carpet in a custom white peplum-style Vera Wang gown that she paired with dangly earrings and a muted lip. But she had attendees and viewers alike wondering if their eyes were playing tricks on them when she appeared in a black version of the same dress during the show's telecast.
Kaling addressed the confusion in an Instagram post on Monday, explaining why she chose to rock two versions of the same gown at the awards ceremony, calling the night a "fashion dream" and giving a shout out to the legendary designer behind her looks.
"Last night was a fashion dream for me. I was so honored to wear Vera Wang an icon and an inspiration to so many people, particularly Asian Americans," Kaling began her post. "But to wear her gown in two colors!! I asked her why she designed this dress in black and white for me, and she said they embody 'her fascination with the duality of both….. it's the eternal attraction of opposites! It also conveys the modernity and sophistication, and purity of both colors!' See?? She is the joyful artist of my dreams!"
As for why she decided to wear both, Kaling explained that she plans to rack up as many opportunities to wear Vera Wang, who is known for her wedding gowns, in the event she never makes it down the aisle herself.
"I am that woman who, when I love a piece of clothing, I buy it in every color. Also, who knows if I am ever getting married, I am wearing as many Vera Wang gowns as I can!" she wrote.
