The article in the magazine was titled: “Normal or Not: Hair on a Preschooler’s Upper Lip.” The photo next to it is a young child holding a fake mustache over her lips.
Sturdy Mom Central captioned her post, “I am appalled at @parents magazine for this article stating that it is okay to wax or pluck your preschooler’s ‘mustache.’ The featured picture even makes me angry. What is this teaching our young children about appearances? It is absurd!”
The magazine proceeds to write that “thick or coarse hair on a little girl or boy’s upper lip is only a problem when it starts to impact their happiness and self-esteem.”
The article suggests taking your child to the doctor to see if there is a hormonal imbalance. If there isn’t then the article gives suggestions on how to get rid of the hair, “cut the strands with small, straight blade scissors” or if your child’s hair is too short to cut you can try “waxing and plucking,” this according to the magazine, are “the safe alternatives” to bleaching creams. Parents Magazine did not return request for comment.
Sturdy Mom Central tells Yahoo Lifestyle, “This is in the current issue of Parents magazine. I just received it in the mail this week. I love Parents magazine but I was appalled when I saw this. What is this teaching about body image? And for preschool?”
A commenter wrote, “100 percent agree. What the heck?!”
