Mom arrested after allegedly driving drunk to 'teach her son a lesson'
A mom from Lexington, Ky., allegedly got behind the wheel of her car and drove drunk in order to “teach her son a lesson,” according to an arrest citation.
Sunita Jairam was arrested on Sunday and charged with drunken driving and endangering the welfare of a minor, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. She had allegedly consumed “a bunch of beer” before climbing into her 2014 BMW X1 for a joy ride with her young son — at 12:51 a.m. According to the arrest citation, Jairam had been drinking all day.
Her son told police he had tried to escape from the vehicle several times “due to his mother’s driving,” which she admitted had gone up to 150 miles per hour. The boy was unsuccessful, though, because the doors were locked, the arrest citation said.
When Jairam was apprehended, Jairam’s blood alcohol level was .161 — twice the level at which a person is legally considered drunk. Officers say she was also slurring her speech. She was taken to the Fayette County Detention Center in lieu of a $2,500 bond, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader, and was scheduled for an initial court appearance Monday.
According to court records, this was not the first time she had gotten in trouble with the law — she had been charged public intoxication and speeding in the past.
