Mom Drops Off Daughter at College, Hangs Out With Shirtless Football Players
On her first day of freshman orientation, a college student was surprised to discover that her mom was the one enjoying her newfound freedom.
On Monday, shortly after Danielle Clay said goodbye to her daughter Avery Leilani, a new student at Texas State University, the teen received an unusual text message: Three photos of her mother posing with four players (three of them shirtless) on the Division I Bobcats football team.
Leilani tweeted a screenshot of her mother’s text, which included the group photos and the message, “I made some friends. Don’t wait up.”

The Houston teen captioned her message, which was retweeted 97,000 times and liked almost 440,000 times, “My mom dropped me off today for College freshman orientation and she sends me this.”
Leilani’s photo also included her response to her mom: “LMAO. Mom you cougar. How in the world.” And she followed up by tweeting, “My mom got more action than me.”
“I took the selfie as part of a competition by the school to win a $500 tuition prize,” Clay tells Yahoo Beauty. “Then it turned into a funny moment.”
Clay saw the football players practicing at the stadium and boldly approached them, asking to take a selfie together. The group came up with the idea to pretend to tackle Clay in one shot, to throw up the Heart of Texas State hand sign, and to have the players hold the camera “because they have longer arms.”
While Clay didn’t end up with the $500 prize, the photo op seems to have been worth it. Leilani tells Yahoo Beauty, “It was a totally normal moment for my mom.”
Still, Clay is surprised that her text message went viral, joking, “I told my daughter, ‘I am never texting you again.’”
