This woman’s breast implants jeopardized her health after one became infected with mold, so she posted a video on TikTok to share her experience and inform viewers about the risks.

Whether elective or urgent, any surgery carries the risk of potential complications even years after the procedure. TikToker and parent Melissa Lima (@melissalima713) knows this all too well from her experience with breast implant illness, a term referring to the wide range of symptoms that can occur from undergoing breast reconstruction or augmentation, such as chronic fatigue, joint and muscle pain, and skin problems among others.

To raise awareness of the potential risks associated with breast implants, Lima posted a video detailing her health scare after having the procedure.

The clip opens with a photo of Lima in a brown tank top while standing next to her late husband, Major League Baseball player José Lima.

Lima explains in the on-screen text that she got breast implants in 2002 because she felt insecure about how her body looked on camera.

While Lima didn’t have any dangerous side effects from the implants for eight years, things took a turn in 2010 when she started experiencing joint pain, inflammation, and depression.

“After [hundreds] of doctors and still no answer, I just gave up,” Lima shares over footage illustrating her various symptoms.

Due to the physical toll on her body and no diagnosis, Lima’s mental health started to decline until a friend told her about breast implant illness.

“So in October 2020, I made a decision that literally saved my life,” Lima notes before the clip cuts to footage of a gloved hand holding a dark brown implant with bacteria floating inside after its removal.

“Yes, that’s mold,” Lima clarifies over a shot of the infected right implant next to the clear left one. Just a few hours after the surgery, the swelling on Lima’s face reduced dramatically.

Lima’s video ends on a positive note as she’s now living her best life as a happy and healthy mom-of-two.

Viewers thanked Lima for sharing her story, and many who were once considering the procedure now have second thoughts after viewing this clip.

“I just had my consultation two weeks ago. Thank you for sharing this,” one user commented.

“You know, I was honestly considering it, but this video just made it a big ‘Hell no’ for me,” shared one TikToker.

“You probably saved so many [people] by sharing your story! So happy to see you are feeling better,” one viewer noted.

By sharing her experience, Lima hopes that others will consider the risks before getting breast implants, and based on the comments, her message seems to be making an impression.
