Mom Shares Urgent Warning About Furniture Safety After 'Huge Wake-Up Call'
One Utah-based mom is issuing a warning to fellow parents after experiencing a somewhat scary situation.
The incident prompting the social media PSA was concerning furniture safety, after a dresser tipped over in her home, which could have possibly caused her children serious injuries.
Thankfully, it did not, however, the mom took to Instagram to share the potentially dangerous ordeal in an attempt to raise awareness.
Social media user JaNae Fay shared a Reels video on the platform of the aftermath of the tip-over, which involved a secondhand dresser she had purchased and later discovered had actually been recalled.
In the clip, filmed from inside a small child's bedroom (as evidenced by the crib bed nearby), toys and miscellaneous items can be seen sprawled all over the floor and spilling out of the drawers, as the furniture chest is tipped-over on its front side.
"Here's your friendly reminder to anchor your furniture to the wall," the 34-year-old wrote in text over the video.
When the incident occurred, Fay was downstairs with some of her other children, while her 3-year-old was upstairs, she explained to Good Morning America.
"All of a sudden, we heard a huge crash, followed by my 3-year-old—just hysterical," she said, continuing, "So, we run up the stairs to see what she was crying about. She didn't actually get pinned underneath... she was standing in the hallway and I saw that big mess [in the room]."
Following the situation, Fay expressed a sense of guilt in the post's caption. "Here’s the thing… I know better. I worked as an EMT, I have heard the stories of children being pinned, injured or killed by falling furniture."
"It was a huge wake-up call for me and my husband and all of our family," Fay admitted to the outlet.
After having learned the lesson needed, she said her husband found anchors online and installed them on their dresser and other pieces of furniture throughout their home that might be at risk of toppling unexpectedly.
Luckily, no one was hurt, but hopefully, this can serve as a good caution to other parents.
