Wearing uncomfortable shoes is so last season! I mean, the only way you'll get us out of the house these days is if our shoes rival our slippers, and that's a hard battle to win. Truth is, nobody has time for pinchy shoes, especially as the temperatures drop.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), there are a few things you should do before buying to ensure you get the comfiest pick:

• Skip shoes that need a “break-in” period.
• Purchase shoes that fit the larger foot.
• Choose a pair that isn't too tight around or pinching your toes.
• Make sure the widest part of your foot matches the largest part of the shoe.
• Avoid heels taller than 2 inches.
• Try on shoes later in the day, when feet tend to swell, and wear the socks you intend to wear with them for the best fit.

As far as structure goes, the APMA recommends shoes that meet at least some of the following criteria:

• Leather upper for top-of-foot support
• Stiff heel counter for support of the rear part of your foot
• Supportive and comfortable cushioning and lining in the insoles
• Flexibility at the ball of the foot
