Choosing a name for your cat or dog is so personal—but as it turns out, there are a few monikers that are more popular than others. That's especially true of this year's batches, per Rover's annual report, which was broken out by common female and male names.

Interestingly, Rover found that we gravitated to similar pet names this year, regardless of whether we have a cat or pup in the family—which explains why there are several crossovers between these lists. For dogs, the five most popular boy names included Max, Charlie, Cooper, Milo, and Buddy; Luna, Bella, Daisy, Lucy, and Lily reigned supreme for girls. The most popular male monikers among felines were Oliver, Milo, Leo, Charlie, and Max. Luna, Lily, Bella, Lucy, and Nala (one of the only differentiators!) held the top spots for females.

Beyond rounding up these universal pet names, Rover also documented some trending, new-age monikers that are based on everything from your go-to paint colors to new movies. In 2022, some dog parents actually decided to name their canines—wait for it—"Beige." (This one landed at number 10 on the trending list and, yes, we have a few questions).

As for one of the trendiest cat names of the year? Turns out, people are naming their felines Hocus Pocus, after the fan-favorite film. Rover experts noted that this moniker, which nailed the sixth spot on the trending cat names list, likely spiked because of the film's second installment, which came out earlier this year.

Names tied to pop culture also cropped up in 2022; pet owners named their dogs after celebrities, such as Keanu Reeves, Denzel Washington, and Sandra Bullock. Cat owners who love Stranger Things named their pets El, which rose 182% in popularity, followed by Hopper at 58%, Mike at 50%, Joyce at 32%, and Eleven at 30%.
