The Mountain May Have Confirmed the Game of Thrones Showdown We've Been Waiting For
Among the most popular Game of Thrones theories, fans have spent years waiting for the Cleganebowl-the showdown between brothers Sandor and Gregor Clegane, better known as The Hound and The Mountain. The characters have been building toward this the entire series, and fans now believe that The Mountain actor Hafthór Bj?rnsson revealed that the Cleganebowl will finally take place in Season 8.
During an Instagram Q&A one person asked Bj?rnsson what his favorite scene in Thrones is, to which he responded, "It happens in season 8...so I can't speak about it."
It's not much, but it would certainly make sense that his favorite scene would be a climactic showdown with The Hound. Back in Season One, it's established that The Hound's face is disfigured when The Mountain burned his brother as punishment for playing with one of his toys. The Hound endured a lifetime of abuse by his brother and has grown to despise him. In Episode Five of Season One, we see the two briefly engage in battle. The Mountain is beaten in a jousting contest by Ser Loras Tyrell, and ambushes the young knight in anger. The Hound steps in to defend Loras and fights his brother before King Robert puts a stop to it. Many fans were convinced the Cleganebowl would take place in Season Seven during the meeting between Cersei and Daenerys, but it never took place.
Now, given Bj?rnsson's comment, fans on Reddit seem pretty certain this confirms the Cleganebowl will finally happen, and they're going nuts.
The last two seasons of Game of Thrones have been pretty much nothing but fan service, and this is the last theory that is yet to take place. The question still remains, who will win this battle? Last week, Bj?rnsson posted a photo of himself on Instagram as The Mountain looking a little worse than normal. We'll know for sure when the show returns for its final season next year.
