A Mystery Couple Is Randomly Picking Up Tabs at Applebee's
Unless you're Kardashian-rich, paying a bill for a party of 16 would make any mom flinch. Luckily for one Pittsburgh mom celebrating her daughter's birthday last week, the Applebee's they ate at has some very kind bill fairies quietly picking up tabs for fellow customers.
The couple, who wishes to remain anonymous, has been paying for fellow Applebee's customers meals two to three times a month for years, KDKA reports. They sit at the bar and ask the waiter or waitress for the check for random parties; sometimes big, sometimes small.
While some Applebee's employees know the identity of the couple, both of whom are local business owners, they are sworn to secrecy. Assistant manager Bernie Lewis told KDKA the only thing she can say is that the husband always says, "I grew up poor and now I'm not."
In a time when flaunting your life and accomplishments online is practically second nature for most people, we give the couple props for wanting to do a nice thing without receiving any attention for it. While it may not be a huge chunk of change in their own lives (or who knows, maybe it is and they're even bigger saints than we think!), it clearly has a positive effect on the Applebee's customers.
The mom told KDKA the event brought tears to her eyes, and that it's never happened to her before. The server that night, Samantha Powell, said seeing the woman's happiness made her cry too. While we don't know who they are, it's good to know people like this couple exist.
