The nail color Meghan Markle wore for engagement photos is no coincidence
Meghan Markle is almost officially a part of the royal family, which means she’s about ready to take on a number of royal responsibilities and traditions. From the looks of the official engagement photos she and fiancé Prince Harry posed for on Monday afternoon, it seems that she has already nailed at least one royal rule: requesting natural polish at her manicure.
Although the photos taken at the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace were a little less traditional than the portraits following the prior royal engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton, it’s evident that Markle is taking a cue from the Duchess of Cambridge when it comes to her nails.
In the photos that display Markle’s beautiful ring, designed by Prince Harry and showcasing two of the late Princess Diana‘s own diamonds, it’s easy to notice that the American actress has gone for a natural nail varnish. And while the neutral pink is a beautiful touch for the engagement photos, allowing the ring to be the center of attention, the shade is no coincidence. In fact, it’s been in the family since 1989.
Following the likes of Queen Elizabeth II, the barely there hue has been seen on the Duchess of Cambridge as well. And although it may seem that the ladies opt for the natural look, it was recently revealed that they’re simply following the rules of the royal wardrobe. Along with dress codes that dictate the presentation of the royal family during public appearances, royal rules discourage the women from wearing colored nail polish, which led the queen to her favorite shade — “Ballet Slippers” from Essie.
The $9 sheer shade is a favorite of the queen’s; she less frequently shows off her natural nails or wears gloves. But photos revealing the hands, and the rings, of both generations of women show that this varnish is one thing they have in common.
Neatly groomed nails were something that many pointed out on Markle during her first public appearance with Harry at the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto. But the red carpet regular will likely continue to evolve her style to match the traditional elegance of current royals.
If that means taking further cues from the ever-stylish Middleton, we’re looking forward to Markle’s many looks to come.
