Nanushka Celebrates 20 Years With Debut Show at NYFW

To celebrate 20 years in business, Nanushka staged its debut runway show in New York — a place of significant meaning to Hungarian founder Sandra Sándor, who previously held presentations in London and Paris.

As a child, Sándor visited family in New Jersey and would often come to the city, noting her desire to become a fashion designer was cemented at age 16 while walking in SoHo. In addition, it’s where her crafty contemporary label’s first 2019 presentation and international store opening, which is soon relocating to Mercer Street, took place.

“All these firsts are in New York. It made sense for the 20th anniversary, and also for the first show, to return to New York,” she said.

Titled “Paper,” the spring collection was designed to reflect the Budapest label’s past, while looking toward its future. Papers dangled from the ceiling; chronicled the brand’s highlights via a two-decade timeline within folders placed on attendees’ seats, and influenced the ready-to-wear handcraft developments.

The best renditions featured upcycled shredded paper poplin fringes, as seen on men’s and women’s knit jumpers, dresses and skirts, whereas new 3D fabric loop constructions didn’t quite hit the same sartorial mark. However, spring’s balance of innovative craft with the brand’s pillars of practicality and comfort worked well across beach-to-street styles: sarong skirts, swimwear tops, playful cheetah layers, crochet dresses and striped knits (especially the tiny pair of shorts) alongside hybrid jersey and satin dresses.

Sándor said the future of Nanushka is about expanding the brand’s values while entering new categories. This was seen on the runway via the introduction of its second handbag, the Sandi, featuring Hungary’s 16th-century Kopjafa symbols, which the brand has consistently utilized to represent its spirit.
