Generate Key Takeaways

Sullivan Rutherford Estate rests peacefully in the heart of the Napa Valley, and has been Rutherford’s hideaway for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for over five decades. The winery was founded during the boom of the boutique winery movement in 1972, and today, winemaker Jeff Cole strives to create world-class wines that balance the best aspects of the New World. Finesse, ambition, experimentation, and attention to detail—and from a phenolic standpoint, ripeness and approachability—with those of the Old-World including elegance, tradition, acidity. These are a few of my favorite things that make the 2021 Coeur de Vigne Cabernet Sauvignon so special.

French for “Heart of the Vine,” the Coeur de Vigne was conceived as a tribute to Sullivan Rutherford Estate’s historic location, both literally and metaphorically, in the “heart” of Napa Valley. Crafted with Winemaker Jeff Cole’s signature attention to detail—representing a vibrant rendition of a classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, with throwback flair.

The 2021 growing season was defined by late spring rains, with mild and steady temperatures through summer. It was an excellent vintage, however small, as the winemaking team’s harvest yields were reduced by 30% in 2021, resulting in wine of notable density, concentration and vigor. Approachable now, this wine can be shared over a meal or cellared for the next decade. Grill up a dry-aged rib eye, serve up a handmade pasta bolognese, or light up a cigar and sit on the porch after sundown to watch the Rutherford dust jump out of the glass from this special bottling of 2021 Coeur de Vigne Cabernet Sauvignon.
