National Slurpee Day provides Bakersfield with a sweet, cool break from the heat
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — All over California people are looking for ways to fight the heat. Here’s a once-a-year way to counter the high temperatures: Walk into an air conditioned 7-Eleven store and get a free Slurpee.
The frozen carbonated concoctions were slushing out of the machines on July 11 — the day the 7-Eleven convenience store chain honors its birthday — on a steady basis.

On Free Slurpee Day, bad news was discouraged, and even the guy who gets to clean the sticky melted Slurpee mess mess every few minutes wasn’t complaining.
There were 10 flavors at the two 7-Elevens I visited, which beats the heck out of the two flavors many adults remember from back in the day.
Does it help 7-Eleven staff to know they’re helping people survive record temperatures?
“It doesn’t,” said Erin Couehran, manager of the 7-Eleven at Brundage and H streets, “but at least we’re providing nice, cool drinks. Slurpees, which helps cool people off.”
Nicole Vasquez was so inspired she went the route of the paying customer and bought a full-size 16-ouncer.

“It wasn’t too long ago that I was actually out there struggling in the heat myself,” she said, “so I definitely look forward to things like this.”
One group of kids was so giddy with sugar, they actually found themselves in a sharing mood. “Could I,” a reporter asked the kids, “have a sip of each one of yours?”
“Yeah!” they shouted in unison.
The debilitating heat and longish lines clearly didn’t damper the festive atmosphere.
