Investigation Discovery is giving us an inside peek at what really happened in the halls of William McKinley High in their brand new docuseries, The Price of Glee.
In a December 8 teaser trailer, the history of the popular, six-season Fox musical series is laid out, featuring the untimely deaths of starring cast members Cory Monteith, Mark Salling, and Naya Rivera in 2013, 2018, and 2020, respectively.
“Three major cast members dead?” one interviewee says in the trailer, while another adds, “I don’t want to say the C-word, the ‘curse’ word, but that’s where your mind goes.”
In the video, Naya Rivera's father, George Rivera, breaks his silence on his daughter’s tragic death and looks back on the success she found playing the fan-favorite, fiery cheerleader Santana Lopez. “I knew that was the top of the mountain for Naya,” he says in his interview. “For your kid, it was just surreal.”
He also declares in the teaser that, “Fame can be poisonous,” though the context for his statement isn’t made clear until later when the clip cuts to the press conference held after Rivera’s body was found in California’s Lake Piru. “She mustered enough energy to get her son back onto the boat. But not enough to save herself,” a law enforcement officer giving the press conference explained at the time of Naya's 2020 drowning. In March 2022, Rivera’s family settled their wrongful death lawsuit with Ventura County. According to People, he lawsuit argued that Rivera's death was preventable, stating that the boat she and her son had rented from Lake Piru didn't have the proper equipment required to comply with the U.S. Coast Guard safety standards.
The trailer also speaks on Monteith’s death from an accidental drug overdose during the filming of Glee’s fifth season and Salling pleading guilty to possession of child pornography, with his subsequent suicide before he could be sentenced to jail time.
The Price of Glee premieres on January 16 on Investigation Discovery and can be streamed on Discovery+. Watch the full teaser trailer below.
