From the little league to the volunteer fire department, these side-by-side hamlets in the Town of Mount Pleasant are very community-minded, and it shows.

They share a train station, which is the Hawthorne train station, and they share a high school, which is in Thornwood. Westlake High School is the home of the Wildcats.

Many businesses have been in the community for generations, like Berger Hardware store on Commerce Street in Hawthorne. The shop has been in the community since 1937.
