Netflix Is Giving Melissa McCarthy & Octavia Spencer the Superhero Treatment
What do you get when you combine Netflix, Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy? The superhero flick we never knew we needed.
The streaming service is teaming up with the famous duo for a brand-new movie called Thunder Force, according to Deadline. Oh, and did we mention that it’s written and directed by McCarthy’s husband, Ben Falcone (Bridesmaids)?
Netflix is remaining tight-lipped about the superhuman flick, which revolves around two women who obtain superpowers. Nevertheless, we do know that Falcone and McCarthy will serve as executive producers alongside Marc Platt (Mary Poppins Returns).
This won’t be Falcone’s first time sitting in the director’s chair. The 45-year-old filmmaker made his directing debut in 2014 with Tammy. He has since directed The Boss in 2016, Life of the Party in 2018 and Super Intelligence, which is scheduled to be released on December 20, 2019.
Spencer most recently executive produced Green Book, which won the highly coveted Academy Award for Best Picture. She previously received two nominations for Best Actress in a Supporting Role—Hidden Figures in 2017 and The Shape of Water in 2018—and won the award in 2012 for The Help.
McCarthy also received a nod at this year’s Academy Award ceremony. She was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Can You Ever Forgive Me?, which was ultimately given to Olivia Colman for The Favourite.
Does Thunder Force have Oscar potential? With Falcone, McCarthy and Spencer running the show, all signs point to yes.
