This New Orleans Saintsations cheerleader is working to help other single moms feel less alone
When Sarah Bass found herself pregnant at 19, she didn’t have many places to turn. Today, Bass’s daughter is 8, and the mom wants to help others in similar positions.
“When I found out I was pregnant, I was freshly 19. It was about a week after my birthday. I didn’t know what was going to happen,” Bass, now a New Orleans Saints Saintsations cheerleader, told New Orleans’ WGNO. “I knew that I was going to have the baby, but there was a lot of negativity in my life.”
These days, Bass helps other moms avoid that “negativity” during their own pregnancies. She leads a weekly support group through a ministry called Embrace Grace, WGNO reported. Bass’s group meets on Wednesday evenings in Hattiesburg, Miss.
In a post about the ministry on her Facebook page, the cheerleader wrote: “I want all single moms to have a place to be free and a place to feel loved, and I want them to know they’re loved, they’re enough, they’re worthy, and they’re not alone. God doesn’t make mistakes, He plans our paths perfectly… and He waits with anticipation for us to conquer all our dreams.”
Embrace Grace is a registered nonprofit organization that extends far beyond Mississippi. The group offers support through sessions across the country for women dealing with unplanned pregnancies who might feel excluded from their communities.
It’s worth pointing out that Embrace Grace is a Christian organization, though it doesn’t seem to be attached to any one religion. “Most churches advocate life and discourage women from getting abortions, but once a brave and courageous girl chooses life, a lot of times the church then steps away and has nothing to offer her for support at that point,” the organization’s website reads.
For women who do choose to carry unplanned pregnancies to term, there aren’t always a lot of resources. So for those who want to give birth, support groups like this can be a great option.
“I decided that I wanted to help other young girls and other teen moms and hold their hand and walk with them and let them chase their dreams, because that is what they want to do, not because they feel like they have to show anybody that they can,” Bass told WGNO. And for young women who’ve chosen to follow in Bass’s footsteps and carry their pregnancy to term, those words could be very powerful.
