The new royal baby finally has a name — and it's a nod to Queen Elizabeth II
Naming a royal baby may sound like a high-pressure task, but it’s actually pretty simple: When in doubt, honor the queen.
Luckily, Queen Elizabeth II’s granddaughter Zara Tindall — who gave birth to her second daughter on June 18 — got the memo. Like her second cousin Princess Charlotte (full name: Charlotte Elizabeth Diana), grandmother Princess Anne, and first-cousin-once-removed Princess Beatrice, the week-old newborn has the middle name Elizabeth, in a nod to Her Majesty. (Take note, Meghan Markle.)
“The name is Lena Elizabeth,” a spokeswoman for Tindall and her husband, rugby player Mike Tindall, confirmed to the BBC. “It was just a name they liked.”
Lena — pronounced “Lay-na” — is the couple’s second daughter, joining big sister Mia Grace, 4. Though she is the youngest royal baby — second cousin Prince Louis is nearly two months older — she will not have a royal title.
Indeed, her birth announcement has already sparked consternation and accusations of sexism because it referred to Lena’s royal mother as simply “Mrs. Michael Tindall.”
