The new royal baby has a very special birthday
The newest member of the royal family has a very patriotic birthday!
The youngest son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was born on St. George’s Day — a holiday which honours the patron saint of England.
April 23 is a special day that celebrates St. George as the protector of the royal family and the patron saint of the country during the Middle Ages.

St. George is believed to have been a soldier in the Roman army who refused to denounce his Christian faith and was subsequently tortured. According to the Legend of Saint George, also known as the Golden Legend, St. George protected himself with the sign of the cross and his faith to slay a dragon and rescue a princess. Although he never actually stepped foot in England, the St. George cross is used as the English flag and is also featured in the Union Jack flag of the United Kingdom.
To commemorate the second birthday the new royal baby’s big brother, Prince George, the Royal Mint issued limited edition specialty coins in 2015 featuring the St. George’s dragon and an image of the Prince’s great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth.
While St. George’s Day was immensely popular in British history, towards the late 16th century, it’s popularity dwindled and is not currently a British bank holiday. St. George’s Day is still viewed as an opportunity to celebrate English history and culture.
