Newborns dressed as Baby Yoda by hospital staffers are a holiday delight
Everybody wants to get their hands on the magic that is Baby Yoda after seeing the adorable little creature that debuted in Disney+’s new series The Mandalorian. But it’s just a few new parents at the Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania who actually get to bring their own home after a nurse knit hats for all of the newborns, inspired by the young Jedi.
The mother and baby unit at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center started to garner attention on social media on World Kindness Day in November when one of its nurses, Caitlin Pechin, made outfits inspired by Mister Rogers for the babies. Now, for the holiday season, she went a step further to make the little ones something “out of this world” that bears a close resemblance to the Star Wars character.
“I made Santa hats with green ears to represent an alien, out of this world Christmas,” Pechin said in a video interview provided by Magee-Womens Hospital. “Everyone really likes the theme.”
One couple, Briana and Sean McGowan, was thrilled about seeing their baby boy Jackson wearing a set of Baby Yoda ears of his own.
“We’ve been laughing ever since we watched The Mandalorian when it came out,” Sean explained in their video interview. “[Briana] looked at me and was like, ‘I want one.’ I was like, ‘Well, you’re gonna get a baby soon. We’ll try to find a Baby Yoda.’”
Little did they know that their wish would come true so soon. Although they were upset to be missing opening night of the new Star Wars movie, their time at Magee-Womens with baby Jackson, including this little surprise, certainly makes up for it.
“We’ve had the best experience here ever,” Briana said. “[Jackson]’s done so well and we credit it to having our baby here, absolutely.”
Magee-Womens Hospital posted photos of the newborns in their new hats to Facebook where people commented on the adorable costumes.
“Literal baby yodas,” one person wrote, while another added, “my heart can’t take it.”
One commenter even suggested having a baby just for the sake of putting a newborn in a hat of their own. “Maybe we will get a baby Yoda in our family soon,” she wrote.
All of the attention poured onto the new parents and their babies is the reason the hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer Patty Genday loves the tradition of dressing the little ones up.
“We love celebrating the birth of our babies with their families and it’s just wonderful to see our parents look at their babies in these adorable little outfits and share them with everyone,” she said. “It’s just a great experience for them.”
