Newlyweds' car mishap on the way to their wedding reception leads to incredible photo opportunity
Jake and Amber Garcia were simply attempting to get to their own wedding reception when they hit a bump in the road.
After their Nov. 10 wedding ceremony near Houston, the newlyweds went to a nearby beach to take photos with their bridal party.
“Everything was fine, perfect,” Amber Garcia told local Houston news station KTRK. “Everything was going so smooth, like a wedding should be going.”
This was a very elegant crew; the bride wore a gorgeous lace gown, a tiara and a white fur stole. Her groom wore a beige three-piece suit.
“We rented a vintage 1966 [Rolls-Royce Austin] Princess car for the day because it’s something we wanted a part of our wedding from the beginning! It was a beautiful car!” Amber told Yahoo Lifestyle. Beautiful, yes. Functional? Debatable.
They hopped in their ride to head to the Nuevo León Reception Hall in Baytown, Texas, for the party when things started to go south.
“Our car started slowing down on the freeway,” Amber recalled. “I looked at my husband and I said, ‘Why is our car slowing down?’ I then look at the driver and he is shaking his head.” That’s never a good sign. When the bride asked if everything was OK, the driver gave it to them straight. “He said, ‘No, we’re running out of gas.’” She said she was scared at first, but that feeling didn’t last long.
The couple was forced to pull over on the side of the freeway. And that’s when the magic happened.
“We called our bridal party to come back and get us because they were ahead of us,” Amber recalled.
They waited on the freeway in their wedding attire next to their fancy car for about 15 minutes to be picked up. And during that time, their photographer kept working. “Once the party showed up, my brother, brother-in-law and the best man got out to help us get our stuff, and as soon as we all turned around, the photographer snapped our photo,” Amber explained. She shared that photo on her Facebook page.
That one time when your calling your bridal party to come rescue us because our 1966 princess car decided to break down…

In the picture, Amber, Jake and the groomsmen are beaming beside the car. Somehow, their spirits were not dampened, even though they’d be late to their own wedding reception. “We weren’t down at all about this,” she promised. “It was the day of love for us since we just got married, and nothing was going to get us upset! Things happen, and you just have to move on and find the positive in it! It was pretty funny to us, actually. As you can tell, we were smiling, laughing because it was just a funny situation!” the laid-back bride said.
Compared to wedding planning, this little bump in the road was a piece of cake. “Wedding planning was so stressful, as it for everyone, especially the bride,” Amber said. “The car mishap was easy-peasy!”
She told KTRK she hoped the story would help cheer people up at a time when the rest of the news can be so “upsetting and depressing.”
