NFL Doubles Down on Capitalizing on Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce Romance
The NFL is defending its decision to overwhelmingly spotlight Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce's relationship after Kelce spoke about the attention being excessive.
In a statement shared with People, a spokesperson for the NFL said, "We frequently change our bios and profile imagery based on what's happening in and around our games, as well as culturally."
"The Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce news has been a pop cultural moment we've leaned into in real time, as it's an intersection of sport and entertainment, and we've seen an incredible amount of positivity around the sport," they continued.
The spokesperson ended their statement by noting, "The vast majority of our content has remained focused on the game, our players and variety of other initiatives, including our Toy Story Funday Football alt-cast, the international games and more."
This statement comes on the same day that, on his podcast New Heights, Kelce shared his candid opinion to his brother Jason on his relationship being the focus of coverage during his recent Chiefs games.
After being asked by Jason how he feels about it, Kelce admitted, "I think it’s fun when they show who was at the game. I think it brings a little bit more to the atmosphere, brings a little bit more to what you’re watching. But at the same time, I think—"
"They're overdoing it," interjected Jason. Travis agreed that was the case, noting, "They’re overdoing it a little bit for sure, especially my situation. [But] I think they’re just trying to have fun with it."
NFL fans had voiced their discomfort at having Swift be the focus of broadcasted games, with the camera often pointed at the pop star. Additionally, the NFL's decision to use Swift's song "Welcome to New York" in an ad for the Chiefs vs. New York Jets game wasn't well-received by some fans, while the crowd at MetLife Stadium also booed when a promo for her Eras Tour concert film was played.
