'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' Star Nia Vardalos Files for Divorce From Husband of 25 Years
Nia Vardalos of My Big Fat Greek Wedding has filed for divorce from her husband, Ian Gomez, after 25 years of marriage.
"We’ve been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time," the former couple said in a joint statement to Entertainment Tonight. "Our relationship became a friendship so the decision to end the marriage is completely mutual and amicable. It is our hope that decency will prevail on the reporting of this story which will soon be yesterday’s news. Thank you for respecting our privacy."
ET also reports that Vardalos filed the divorce papers on Tuesday with the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles County, citing "irreconcilable differences." The date of separation is listed as July 29, 2017.
Vardalos married Gomez, an actor who has been featured in shows like Cougar Town and Felicity, on September 5, 1993. In 2008, after years of struggling with infertility, including 13 failed in vitro treatments and numerous failed adoption attempts, Vardalos and Gomez finally matched with a 3-year-old girl, their daughter Ilaria, People reports. In light of their divorce, Vardalos is seeking joint legal and physical custody of Ilaria.
In 2002, Vardalos rose to fame as the star, writer and producer of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Gomez also appeared in the comedy film in the role of Mike, who was the lead's best friend. The couple also reprised their roles for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, which premiered 14 years later in 2016. They also cohosted The Great American Baking Show from 2015 to 2017.
Since their split, it appears that Vardalos is taking this time to focus again on her work. Earlier this week, the actress and screenwriter posted a photo of a feather pen with the caption, "See you later, I’m going into my writing cave."
We're wishing them both the best.
