Nic von Rupp Scores Coxos On the Best Day of the Winter
If somebody asked you to dream up a perfect right-hand pointbreak it would probably look exactly like Coxos on its best days. The wave is straight off the pages of a doodling grade schooler’s note book. It breaks following the shoreline. It’s fast. It churns out barrels. And it can handle some serious size. For all these reasons and more, the right-hander in Ericeira attracts plenty of attention and plenty of salty locals who don’t want the attention.
For Freddie Meadows, a Swedish surfer who might spend more sessions in the Baltic than the Atlantic, a single winter day here can gift “waves better than he’s probably surfed in 10 years.”
“I surf most of my time in Sweden,” he said in a recent visit with Nic von Rupp. “When you come somewhere like this, you’re blown away by what you’re seeing.”
However you paint it, Meadows got some grace from the surf gods. His host (and probably his best chance at an invitation for a spot on the peak) was Nic von Rupp and their mid-February session earlier this year did happen to come on one of the best days of the winter. Even if you weren’t a Baltic surfer, this would qualify as one helluva session.
