Nick Jonas talks Golden Globes, Joe and Sophie's wedding, and mall food
Nick Jonas used to be known as the youngest member of the Jonas Brothers (and he still is), but the singer, actor, and dancer has certainly come a long way since his JoBro days.
The 25-year-old has performed on Broadway, in films (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle opens Dec. 20), on TV, and, of course, live in concert for millions of screaming fans. On Monday, he was nominated for a Golden Globe for the song “Home,” featured on the Ferdinand soundtrack.
But beyond his amazing résumé, on Wednesday, he surprised fans with a concert at the Chase Pay Village within the Oculus at Westfield World Trade Center in NYC. The former Disney star performed his songs “Levels,” “Jealous,” “Close,” and “Home,” among other tunes.
”I’m here today to perform — bring some holiday cheer,” he tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “It’s an exciting opportunity to combine two things that I love: music and shopping [while] creating a good holiday vibe for the people that come out.”
Read on for our chat with the heartthrob as he talks about where he’ll be spending Christmas, what his role will be in his brother Joe’s upcoming wedding to Sophie Turner, and whether there is truth to rumors that he’ll play Nightwing.
What are your favorite stores? Are you an online shopper?
I do some shopping online. For me, it’s all about convenience. I prefer to keep my shopping very quick. It depends on the situation and where I am in the world. I like a mall, like everybody else. I also like targeting where I’m going, but the online shopping thing has become a big piece of the puzzle.
Since you love malls, what’s your favorite mall food?
Auntie Anne’s [Pretzels], of course. It’s the best. Can’t beat it. I grew up in New Jersey, and we are known for our malls, bowling alleys, and diners — and in some cases, the diner would be in the mall, and there would also be a bowling alley in it, so you have everything covered in one place.
Nick is looking forward to family time this Christmas:

What’s on your holiday wish list?
Just time with family, to be honest. There’s nothing material that I really need — just that time with my little nieces, my brother [Kevin] and his wife, and my brother [Joe] and his fiancée [Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner]. I just want to see them all and have some downtime.
Speaking of Joe, will you be singing or giving a speech at his wedding?
I imagine I’ll be doing something. I don’t know what yet. They’ve got to plan it out first, but I’m sure I’ll probably do something.
Do you usually keep speeches on the funny side or more heartfelt?
I go for a mix of both. I say something really serious and sentimental and then come in with a joke right after just to keep people on their toes.
Any idea what you’re giving your brothers for the holidays?
We haven’t done gifts in a few years. We said: Let’s enjoy the time we have together and not stress about getting each other gifts. But this year, we’re gonna do it. It’s very exciting for the little ones, obviously, to get gifts. And I’ve got a plan. I like to theme the whole thing and set a budget. I’m very specific about how I go about it. Otherwise, it’s just debauchery.
What’s the theme this year?
I can’t say! But it’s very thoughtful.
Will you be getting together in New Jersey?
Everyone is getting together in New Jersey. I live in New York now too, as well as L.A., so I’ll come back to my place probably, but we’ll be in Jersey! Back to the home base.
What’s your favorite Christmas song?
Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas.”
And you’re performing on New Year’s Eve!
I’m performing on Dick Clark’s New Years Eve. I haven’t been back in many years, so it will be nice to be back on that stage. It’s one of the best environments to perform in on New Year’s. I think the great part is having my friends around. We’ll be able to hang out. It’ll be special — in the middle of it all — together.
What songs will you be singing on New Year’s?
I’m not sure yet, but I’m sure that I’ll perform “Home,” the song that was just nominated for a Golden Globe. It’s very exciting. In addition to that, I’ll probably pick one of the previous releases — “Close” or “Jealous” or something.
What was it like to hear about your Golden Globe nomination?
I’m still on a high from it. When I walk into rooms now. I did The View, and they said it before my name, which was kind of cool thing. “Golden Globe-nominated…” It’s a really special feeling, and I’m so humbled and honored to be a part of that group of incredible singers and songwriters. I’m just floored by that.
Do you ever craft an acceptance speech ahead of time for awards like these, or do you wing it?
I think everyone kind of does when they’re a kid. If you like to watch the Oscars or the Golden Globes when you’re young, you go and play with your friends and pretend you just won an award. At least I did. As I’ve gotten older and not won so many awards and been nominated so many times, I sort of let that go. With this one, I’m trying not to think about it. I don’t want to stress about it — especially through the holidays. Just being nominated and recognized like that is enough. If it happens it happens, and hopefully I say something somewhat graceful.
For 2018, do you have any resolutions?
My resolution last year was to take more time off and to take some time to be inspired and see the world. I went to Europe in the early part of last year. I also took a little trip in the summer and it was really inspiring for me. I ended up having one of my best years yet. I’m just trying to do a repeat of that — really work hard, but also find some time to get out and see the world and be inspired by some people. Traveling to me is so important.
What’s on your travel bucket list?
I’d love to go to Africa. I’ve never been there. That’s my next spot. I’m a big snowboarder — going away this year right before the Globes actually to Whistler [in Vancouver, British Columbia] , which will be really fun. First time up there. A couple other spots I want to check out. Maybe New Zealand.
There’s a rumor out there that you’re interested in playing the role of Nightwing.
Yeah! I’m interested in playing so many roles. Someone pulled out a picture and was like, “People are vying for you to play this role. “The thing about the comic book world and graphic novels is that the fanbase is so intense. These characters and these stories become a part of the fabric of their lives. With respect to that community also I’m humbled but understand that they’ve got their picks in their mind, and they’re passionate about it, which is super important. If the director and the creative team want me to read for it, I’m down, but also I know the fans would have some thoughts of their own.
Do you have a movie dream role?
I think the next thing for me is I’m writing a lot myself. I’m working on these different acting projects in between Kingdom, and Goat, and Jumanji. There’s some momentum there.
