  • Nick Jonas is opening up about the course of events that led to him learning that he has type 1 diabetes.

  • When he was 13, he had his first major episode that almost caused him to go into a coma.

From taking a look at Nick Jonas, you would probably never know that he has a disease, but Nick was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was just 13 years old. He’s been managing the disease ever since, but Nick is now opening up about the terrifying course of events that led to him getting his formal diagnosis.

In an interview with Cigar Aficionado, Nick revealed that had he not been rushed to emergency care when he was 13, he would’ve likely become comatose. “I was very close to a coma, like a day away, if I hadn’t gone to the hospital,” he said. Honestly, that sounds so scary for someone so young to be going through! “I kept asking my parents—am I going to be okay?” Nick added. “I was just so concerned that it was going to limit my ability to do all the things I wanted to do. I was very scared—it’s a big life change.”

Thankfully, Nick realized that having diabetes wouldn’t compromise his life all that much. “I found out very quickly it’s a very manageable disease,” he said. “As long as you’re really diligent.”

Does this story sound a little familiar? That’s because Nick’s diabetes served as the inspiration for the Jonas Brothers song “A Little Bit Longer.” In their book, Burning Up, Nick detailed the songwriting process and said the lyrics for the song came to him while he was having a rough day with his blood sugar.

“I was in Canada shooting Camp Rock, and I was having one of those days where my blood sugar was a little bit out of control. I walked into a banquet room at the hotel where we were staying and saw a baby grand piano,” Nick said. “Nobody was in there, so I sat down and began to play. Fifteen minutes later, I called everybody into the room to come listen to the song. They all loved it. It was a really great feeling, because I had been feeling so down.”

Nick has been living his life normally and continues to be a voice for the disease. I’m just glad he’s totally okay now, TBH!
