Nicole Kidman has four children: two with her ex, Tom Cruise, and two with her husband Keith Urban. But her path to motherhood wasn't easy. In a recent interview with Tatler, the actress opened up about her heartbreaking miscarriages.

In 1990, when she was just 23, Nicole became pregnant for the first time with her then-husband Tom Cruise. Sadly, the pregnancy was ectopic, and she suffered a miscarriage.

"I know the yearning," the actress, now 50, said, according to ET Canada. "That yearning. It's a huge, aching yearning. And the loss! The loss of a miscarriage is not talked about enough. That's massive grief to certain women."

The couple then decided to adopt Isabella Jane (born 1992) and Connor Anthony (born 1995).

"There's an enormous amount of pain and an enormous amount of joy on the other side of it," Kidman continued to the British publication. "The flipside of going through so much yearning and pain to get there is the feeling of 'Ahhhh!' when you have the child."

Sadly, Nicole would know that grief again when she miscarried in 2001, the same year as her and Tom's divorce.

But she found happiness again in 2006, when she and Keith tied the knot, and in 2008, they welcomed their first daughter, Sunday Rose, now 9. Nicole was 41 years old.

"At 41, it's more of a painful love," Kidman told Elle after the birth of her first biological child. "I look at that little girl and I'm like, 'Oh, no, what's going to happen?' It's almost like my heart is stretching; I'm feeling all the muscles stretch with emotion. It's a beautiful love, but there's a lot of fear and pain for her life, and for Bella and Connor's life."

In 2010, Nicole and Keith's youngest, Faith Margaret, now 7, was born. Despite their parents' fame, the girls have made very few public appearances - and there seems to be a reason for that.

"When it comes to my kids, I'm just like a lioness," she continued to the magazine at the time. "I'm like, 'No one gets near my babies!' That's why we chose not to sell the photos of her. We just want to have our little cocoon."

And apparently, Nicole and Keith's kids aren't all that interested in their mom's spotlight, either. As the actress told Tatler, when she tried to give her girls the Emmys and Golden Globes she earned on Big Little Lies, Sunday replied, "No, my shelf is full, I don't want that."

"Her shelf is full of snow globes and certificates and books, you know, bits and pieces and knick-knacks," Nicole explained. "I totally get it. You don't want some trophy your mum's won sitting up there. The little one was like ...'I WANT IT!'"
