In Northern California, a One-Room Schoolhouse Converted Into a 3-Bedroom Home Is Listed for $6.5 Million
In Northern California’s Napa and Sonoma Valleys, potential home owners might tour one of the popular wine region’s many Tuscan-inspired villas or maybe a modern take on a rustic farmhouse or even a Greek Revival-style mansion. But if you’re looking for something more outside the box, a former one-room schoolhouse converted to a comfortable residence just came on the market in Sonoma with a $6.5 million price tag.
Originally built in 1910, the restored and expanded schoolhouse at 1250 Lovall Valley Road now stands as a spacious, livable home on an acre of land with a separate two-car garage. The main house spans 4,500 square feet across two stories with 12-foot ceilings and the schoolhouse’s original hardwood floors. Three bedrooms and baths are featured in the home, plus a half-bath that’s contained within a spacious studio. And, if its provenance, rows of oversized mullioned windows, and the well-preserved exterior don’t take you back in time, the one remaining chalkboard in the home just might do the trick.

Through a red entrance door is the fireside formal living room. It sits next to a spacious family room, as well as the chef’s kitchen, which has been remodeled and equipped with upscale appliances, such as a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a six-burner Wolf range. A nearby dining space is nice for casual meals for two, though larger groups can be accommodated in the formal dining room.
The primary suite is on the lower level with classic schoolhouse-like double-hung windows that fill the space with natural light. The spa-like ensuite bathroom features a large soaking tub set in front of a tiled shower. You’ll find the other bedrooms upstairs, set under vaulted ceilings and flush with sunlight as well. An office rounds out the main home, while the detached garage includes a wine room.
Outdoors, a newly installed in-ground pool and hot tub stand out among the lush landscaping that includes clipped boxwood hedging, a rose garden, a row of grape vines, and a vast stretch of lawn ringed by mature trees.
Caroline Sebastiani and Kristie Eddy of Sotheby’s International Realty hold the listing.
