Good morning and welcome to another episode of Things That Can Only Happen in 2018.

The latest? Well, at this point you've probably heard about ABC's decision to cancel Roseanne after its eponymous star Roseanne Barr went on a racist Twitter rant that targeted Valerie Jarrett, a former Obama administration advisor. Barr has since apologized, calling the rant "Ambien tweeting" in a since-deleted post.

Turns out, blaming Ambien didn't go over so well with, well, Ambien. The maker of the drug, Sanofi, trolled Barr on Wednesday morning, and the company made it clear that it isn't buying her attempt to excuse her behavior.

"People of all races, religions and nationalities work at Sanofi every day to improve the lives of people around the world," the Sanofi US company account tweeted. "While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication."

Sanofi wasn't the only one who went in. Dictionary.com also released a statement in Ambien's defense.

"The name Ambien is thought to come from the word "ambient" or similar words in French. Ambient does not mean "prone to making racist comments," but it does mean "of the surrounding area or environment."

We've got to be honest here, at the beginning of the week, we did not foresee that Ambien and the dictionary would end up teaming up against Roseanne Barr on Twitter over racism. What a week.
