Sheriff's deputy suspended after asking woman for date in lieu of traffic ticket: 'We oughta hang out sometime'
A sheriff’s deputy in Toledo, Ohio, was suspended on Monday after issuing a woman a warning in lieu of a traffic ticket — and then asking her out on a date.
The woman said she was approached on May 25 by Deputy Richard Strong of the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office, who was sitting in his marked vehicle in the parking lot of a Family Dollar Store, according to WTVG. Strong allegedly remained in his vehicle but motioned to the woman to walk over to him.
The deputy reportedly told the mom that he could give her a ticket for not having a front license plate and because she and her children weren’t wearing their seat belts. He even informed her of the cost of the ticket and attorneys fees, the news station reported.
But he told her he’d do her a favor and let her leave with just a verbal warning instead. Then, the woman said Strong became inappropriate, handing her a card with his personal phone number on it and saying, “We oughta hang out sometime.”
The woman went on to file a formal complaint against Strong on May 28. She accused him of abusing his authority by holding a personal meeting over her head, according to WTOL.
Strong wound up being charged with discourteous treatment on June 6. He reportedly waived a review board and disciplinary hearing and accepted a two-day unpaid suspension.
