Old Bay's newest product — a bottled hot sauce made with the same seasoning that enjoys a cult-like following across the United States — is so hot, it completely sold out in just under an hour on the day of its hyped launch. McCormick Spices, the parent company behind Old Bay seasoning, quietly unveiled its new zesty hot sauce on Wednesday, promoting the sauce as a way to "warm-up comfort foods, like chilis, soups and stews." Per a press release, it's made with aged cayenne pepper, distilled vinegar, and a whole lot of Old Bay's classic spice mix. Old Bay's hot sauce may have had the most allure for those gearing up to party with friends on Super Bowl Sunday.
But what McCormick thought would be a soft launch ended up spawning an Internet sensation: People made a mad dash to grab their own bottle of Old Bay hot sauce, and it was only about an hour after making the product available on its website that the company had announced it completely sold out. "Your love for all things Old Bay may have broken the internet," the company tweeted. "Thanks for always being ready to try something new. Sold out, but restocking."

A 10-ounce bottle of Old Bay's new hot sauce was sold for just $3.49, which explains why some people may have overloaded their online carts (one woman shared on Twitter that she "mistakenly" bought 15 bottles in one go). But others may have gotten a little too greedy, because within a few hours the new hot sauce was popping up on sites like eBay for a whopping $49.99. It didn't take long for Old Bay's viral horde of diehard fans to express their (somewhat funny!) displeasure.

According to McCormick's initial press release, Old Bay hot sauce is slowly rolling out to grocery stores across the nation over the next few weeks — and it may even be available in your favorite restaurants sooner. Keep an eye on the hot sauce section in your local Wegmans, Safeway, Acme, Giant, and Food Lion stores in February, where it'll be on sale for $3.49. In the meantime, you could always settle for a plate of Old Bay deviled eggs instead?
