  • Adam Levine is leaving The Voice after 16 season.

  • Host Carson Daly revealed the news in May, after the network had already announced Adam was returning in a previous statement.

  • Blake Shelton's girlfriend Gwen Stefani will replace Adam in season 17.

The Voice just announced some major news: Adam Levine will not be returning to the NBC show for season 17.

Although the network had previously announced that he would coach next year’s artists alongside John Legend, Blake Shelton, and Kelly Clarkson, host Carson Daly revealed on Today that Adam has turned his chair for the last time. Here’s what Carson had to say:

"After 16 seasons Adam Levine our beloved coach and friend has decided to leave The Voice. Adam was one of the original coaches that launched the show, winning the competition three times, and inspiring many of the artists that he worked so closely with over the years. Of course, many viewers will miss watching his frenemy relationship with Blake Shelton. He’ll always be a cherished member of The Voice family, and of course we wish him nothing but the best."

But that’s not all: The Voice already has a replacement for Adam-and it’s very exciting for Blake.

"With Adam’s departure you might be wondering, who’s going to be sitting in that coveted big giant red chair? I’m happy to share this morning that Gwen Stefani will be returning for season 17. Gwen has sat in the chair before, she met her current boyfriend Blake Shelton through the show, and we’re looking forward to having Gwen back next season. It should be a ton of fun."

That’s right, Gwen is back! Though we’re excited to hear Gwen’s expert advice (and we’re sure Kelly is happy to have another gal pal), we mostly can’t wait to see the pop star go head-to-head with her longtime boyfriend. Will she give Blake as much trouble as Adam? Probably not, but we still think she’ll give him a run for his money!
