This One Mistake Is Ruining Your Mascara
Mascara is an easy way to transform your eyes from tired to bright and awake in a pinch, simply by lengthening and thickening your lashes — if you use it correctly, at least. Unfortunately, tons of people make a big mistake when applying their mascara: Pumping the applicator wand in and out of the tube.
While many beauty lovers believe pumping the wand adds more mascara to it, or that it helps keep the right amount of product on the brush, in reality, this error actually makes your mascara work less effectively.
"This pushes air into the tube, which will make the mascara dry out faster, causing clumping and flaking," explains Marlena Stell, founder and CEO of Makeup Geek. "Instead, gently twist the wand back and forth or in circular motions to pick up the desired amount of product."
NO: Pumping In and Out
As we said, pumping in and air out like this only spells trouble for your eyelashes and the mascara itself.
YES: Wiping the Edges
Twist your mascara brush within the tube, then remove from tube rather than wiping it all over the edge and apply to your eyelashes.
YES: Making Circles
Move your brush in a circular motion, then take it out of the tube and apply it directly to lashes.
