The one thing Victoria's Secret model Jourdana Phillips says needs to change about the fashion show

It’s pretty hard not to spot Jourdana Phillips on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway. The 5-foot-10-inch beauty is one of the few black models to sashay down the famous catwalk and to do so while sporting her natural hair.

Phillips first got her Angel wings in 2016, and she proved that she “earned it” dressed in sexy black lingerie during the Weeknd’s musical performance. Beyond her revealing underthings and mesmerizing gaze, it was Phillips’s short, platinum curly coiff that really made a statement.

It was bold. It was beautiful. And it was dramatically different from the bra-skimming bombshell waves that have become synonymous with the show. (Victoria’s Secret Angel Maria Borges made hair history in 2015 when she swapped her long extensions for a teeny Afro.)

“Blond was fun but very difficult maintenance! I had to re-dye my hair every two weeks,” Phillips tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

Although the hair color was a bit frustrating to keep up, she absolutely loves her curls. Phillips says, “Every day my curls look different, but that’s also a great part about it. I’ve become more comfortable with my texture and allowing it to do what it want.”

Phillips’s blond curls soon faded back to black, a strategic hair-color decision she made to “maintain a healthy scalp and hair.” And she stuck with the darker hue for her return at the 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

Even though this year’s show includes six new black models, all with unique hair textures, Phillips still must bring her own styling products. She packs John Frieda Frizz-Ease Curl Dream Curls Daily Styling Spray, SheaMoisture Manuka Honey and Mafura Oil Conditioner, and Maui Moisture Curl Quench + Coconut Oil Curl Milk.

“I know what works best for my hair,” says Phillips. “I tell them what I like and they tell me what they think I need, and we kind of discuss what we think will make it look the best. It’s my hair, but they are the professionals, so we have to work together!”

For this reason, Phillips doesn’t take her role as a Victoria’s Secret Angel lightly. She says: “I think we are making some great strides making the fashion industry more diverse. There are many more models of color then before. However, now it is important that we support these diverse groups of talent with diverse supporting teams. Hairstylists, makeup artists, photographers, and creative directors should also be from diverse backgrounds as well so this industry can be fully inclusive.”

We hope this Victoria’s Secret Angel’s words fall on the ears of the beauty gods, so that next year the buzz about the fashion show will include the hiring of hairstylists who are actually skilled in doing multitextured hair.
