OnePlus and Google Collaborating on New Foldable Phone

OnePlus confirmed during MWC 2022 that its team is working with Google on a new foldable smartphone. Release date and pricing were noticeably absent from the announcement. However, OnePlus did refer to the phone’s development as “long-term work.”
Thanks to its repertoire of both affordable smartphones and premium flagships, OnePlus has established itself as one of the most popular manufacturers in the business. The only thing its portfolio lacks is a foldable phone – something OnePlus looks to fix with this new Google collaboration.
According to a report from MWC 2022, Gary Chen, OnePlus head of OS Product, says the team is working directly with Google. The team is looking to bring “new features” to foldable devices and their underlying software. As Android OS was developed by Google, the collaboration is positive for OnePlus.
However, don’t expect to see the foldable smartphone anytime soon. “Our collaboration with Google is more visionary, long-term work” Chen said. He then went on to discuss how the collaboration will allow OnePlus to bring new privacy features to the OS and optimize a user interface for the large foldable screen.
Pricing was left out of the discussion. We’d expect it to be competitively priced with the Galaxy Z Fold3. OnePlus parent company Oppo launched its own foldable smartphone in China starting at $1,200. It’s unclear if OnePlus will borrow any design cues from the Oppo Find N. It uses a Samsung display for its large inner screen and boasts an outer screen larger than the Z Fold3.
