  • Oprah just spoke out to defend Meghan Markle from "unfair" media portrayals of her.

  • She described Markle as graceful, warm and funny, adding that she does not read any of the negative press.

  • Oprah also opened up about her collaboration with Prince Harry on a new documentary series for Apple, which will focus on mental illness and mental wellness.

Oprah spoke out in defense of Meghan Markle during her appearance on CBS This Morning today, calling the media's depiction of the Duchess of Sussex unfair.

"I think she’s being portrayed unfairly," Oprah told Gayle King during the interview. “I feel that if people really knew her, they would know that she is not only everything you perceive her as being–graceful and dynamic in holding that position–but that she just has a wonderful warm, giving, funny heart. I see all the crazy press around her, and I think it's really unfair."

On the plus side, though, Oprah confirmed that Markle avoids the negative press about herself. "She does not read anything, and I think that's remarkable."

During her appearance on the morning show where she promoted her new book, The Path Made Clear, the O of O also gave additional details on another major project. It was announced this morning that Oprah and Prince Harry are collaborating as co-creators and executive producers of a mental health documentary series, which will launch on Apple’s new Apple TV+ series in 2020.

"I was having a conversation with him, and I asked the question 'What do you think are the most important issues facing the world right now?'" Oprah said of how the project came to be. “He said there are two: climate change, and mental health. As you know, he's spoken about his own issues, and what he went through after his mother died, and how being able to talk about it has benefited him, so it's a passion of his."

At the end of that conversation, Oprah explained, she mentioned to him that she was developing projects for Apple. "I said [mental health] is a big concern of mine too, I want to try and ease the stigma, and he said 'If there's anything I can do to help.' And I go 'Uh...!'"

That's how the collaboration was born, Oprah said, confirming that she's been flying back and forth across the Atlantic to attend "secret meetings in London" about the project. "I've flown there with the crew, sitting in sessions, talking about the direction we're gonna take. Our hope is that it will have an impact on reducing the stigma and allowing people to know they’re not alone, allowing people to speak up about [mental illness] and identify it in themselves and their friends."
