Origin Story of Jason Kelce's Iconic Super Bowl LVIII Mask Finally Unveiled
Jason Kelce
Jason Kelce has had numerous viral moments these past few days, but the one of him wearing a lucha libre-style mask at Super Bowl LVIII–and dancing in it at the Chiefs' afterparty–has a backstory worth sharing.
According to a series of photos shared on Instagram by a loyal Kansas City Chiefs fan who attended the big game on Sunday, Feb. 11, the now iconic mask originally belonged to her 14-year-old.
The attendee, Sarah Bearden Smith, documented her and her family's fabulous trip to Las Vegas to watch their team play. The Feb. 14 upload also included the moment her son Elijah met the 36-year-old Philadelphia Eagles center in the stands.
In the photo, Elijah–who was decked out in Chiefs gear–looked happy as could be to meet the NFL star as the two posed for a photo inside the stadium. The close-up image showed off the father of three's applauded plaid overalls, complete with the Chiefs logo and, now, Elijah's mask.
So, how do we know it belonged to the young fan? Well, the slide Sarah shared directly before the pic of the duo showed Elijah cheering loudly and proudly while wearing the mask (which clearly fit his face better than it did on the football pro).
The doting mom also shared a snippet of the Chiefs afterparty, catching Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce dancing together in the club, as well as another moment her family shared with Jason–who was once again rocking the lucha libre mask.
Sarah also seemed to later confirm the mask belonged to her son in a comment shared to her Instagram Story, which promised the mask was "clean" before Jason put it on.
As Sarah so eloquently explained in the caption of one of her posts, "What happens in Vegas did not stay in Vegas." At least, not this time.
