HoYoverse’s anime-style space game Honkai: Star Rail was just recently updated to version 1.4, which introduced new characters, story events, and an all-new Pokémon-inspired game mode to the title.

Revolving around the video game Aetherium Wars, this event mode has players collect NPC characters of three different types to compete in a tournament with. Both the surrounding story and the gameplay mechanics have been heavily inspired by Pokémon with tons of funny references being found. Players are already calling it the best event HoYoverse has done so far in the game.

One fan from China, who is obviously an incredibly talented animator, celebrated this event in their own way: They entirely remade the opening sequence of the original Pokémon anime series, replacing the key characters and creatures with ones from Honkai: Star Rail. It’s some seriously impressive work, especially considering that the in-game event has been available for a mere three days.

The Trailblazer has taken the role of Ash Ketchum, while Dan Heng is Brock and March 7th is Misty. Numby, an adorable warp trotter introduced in the recent update, represents Pikachu. Team Rocket is represented by the Stellaron Hunters Kafka and Blade as Jessie and James with Silver Wolf as Meowth. Honkai: Star Rail mobs can be seen all throughout the video as stand-ins for Pokémon. Topaz, an upcoming Honkai: Star Rail character and an antagonist in the newest story quest, shows up as the main character’s rival, Gary.

Astral Express crew members Welt and Himeko (as Professor Oak and Ash’s mother) as well as Natasha and Yukong (as nurse Joy and officer Jenny) make a short appearance as well.

The video is available on Chinese platform Bilibili and someone has made a side-by-side comparison with the original Pokémon anime opening that can be found on Reddit.

Pokémon is getting a live-action series soon, but the new anime Pokémon Horizons is struggling a bit. It’s a good thing fans can get some distraction from those woes with Honkai: Star Rail as it came to PS5 this week as a free-to-play game.
