Oscar 2018: The Story Behind Tiffany Haddish’s Red Carpet Dress Will Have You in Tears

This awards season, the term “fashion statement” has taken on a whole new meaning, with stars wearing looks that have political, social, and personal significance behind them. And the red carpet looks from Oscars 2018 are already shaping up to be no different. Tonight, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, Tiffany Haddish reaffirmed that sometimes a dress is so much more than just a dress.

The comedic actress might be best known for making us laugh, but Haddish had us tearing up as she spoke of the importance of her gown for the 90th Academy Awards. Her father, who hailed from the African nation, Eritrea, told his daughter that she would someday end up at the Oscars — and if she did, Haddish should honor her heritage and her people. So tonight, she is wearing an authentic Eritrean princess dress to celebrate her dad, who passed away earlier this year. And yes, the Girls Trip star looks perfectly regal. She may not have been among the nominees tonight, but this lady totally gets our vote. (Photo via Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic)
