Ottolinger Deconstructs G-Star’s Elwood Jeans
The inaugural edition of “The Denim” by G-Star Raw kicks off with Ottolinger as the first collaborator.
The Dutch denim brand’s new collaborative series of one-off, limited-edition jeans created by guest designers begins with the Berlin-based brand. Christa B?sch and Cosima Gadient’s independent label, which has garnered a cult-like following since its 2016 debut, reinterpreted the G-Star Elwood: the first pair of jeans to be created using 3D-designed denim back in 1996.

“This initiative is all about providing guest designers the opportunity to explore their creativity and push boundaries in denim,” Gwenda van Vliet, G-Star’s chief brand officer, said of the series. “The G-Star Elwood is still as relevant as ever, and Ottolinger’s new, sensual interpretation beautifully captures the innovative spirit we aim to foster.”
As Ottolinger is known for deconstructing women’s wear pieces through experimental techniques and unconventional treatments, “The Denim” is true to the avant-garde brand’s signature distressed style.
Playing with and “deconstructing conventions,” the Swiss design duo transformed emblematic elements of the Elwood—like the knee pads and signature stitching—into contemporary and feminine super slim fit jeans for women.
“Diving into such an amazing archive, the G-Star Elwood immediately caught our attention as one of the most iconic pieces, and we were beyond excited by the prospect of reworking it for our collaboration,” Gadient said. “For us, design is very much a mode of storytelling, and so by tailoring this classic fit also for a woman’s body we get to build on an already great history, as well as add new narratives to it.”
The resulting jeans come in two versions: The Denim 001 and The Denim 001 Zip. The former has a low waist with gold hardware and stitching, featuring side zips at the bottom. The latter features full-length side zips as well as silver hardware and stitching.
“The Denim” is now globally available on both brand’s websites, ranging from 299.95 to 349.95 euros (about $252-$384).
