You Can Get Your Passport Faster At The ‘Special Passport Fairs’
The U.S. Department of State recently announced new opportunities to get a passport. For many people, getting a passport for the first time can feel intimidating and complicated. Between the special photo, the application and mailing the documents off for approval, the process can be confusing and prone to mistakes,
But this series, known as Special Passport Acceptance Fairs, is being offered to help more U.S. citizens obtain a passport and submit their applications mistake-free/
Most events are designed specifically for first-time applicants and will take place at various public places including local libraries, government offices and post office locations throughout March and April.
At these fairs, attendees will complete their applications and have them accepted. Then the passports will be sent off for processing.
What To Bring
Attendees are encouraged to bring all appropriate documentation, including the completed DS-ll: Application for A U.S. Passport form, photo identification, a certified birth certificate as well as the required fees.
Those looking to renew their passport are encouraged to do so online.
A few of the Special Passport Acceptance Fairs accept walk-in appointments, while some others don’t require appointments at all, but interested applicants should check the details of each event to ensure they’re able to attend.
Cost And Timeline
Adult applicants should expect to pay $130 for the application fee and $35 for the acceptance fee. For children, it costs $100 for the application fee and $35 for the acceptance fee.
According to the State Department, processing times for applications accepted through these fairs is routine and guarantees no specific timeframe. Passport acceptance facilities do, however, offer expedited service for $60. Applicants can also choose to have their passports delivered more quickly to them through rushed delivery for around $20.
Those needing a passport for travel sooner than the current processing time should make an appointment at one of the country’s 26 passport centers.
From early March through April, 44 Special Passport Acceptance Fairs are happening around the country. Visit travel.state.gov for more information.
