Paulina Porizkova says she 'will not be shamed' after commenter criticizes her for being 'sexually suggestive'
Paulina Porizkova is hitting back against a commenter who criticized how she presents herself on Instagram.
The model, who has spoken out about ageism and older women being "invisible" to society, posted a screenshot of a comment from an Instagram user who wrote, "You just need constant stroking don't you? There's something wrong with that. Maybe you need therapy instead of sexually suggestive/nude photos out in the public sphere."
Porizkova captioned the post, "I wonder if she posts this to all Instagramers in bikinis and revealing body shots? It must take an awful lot of her time. Or is it that I dare to celebrate my older body? That I'm not ashamed and will not be shamed into societal compliance of being invisible as a woman of a certain age?"
She also added the hashtag #betweenJLOandBettyWhite, a reference to her previous comments she made to Yahoo Life about how women over a certain age seem to disappear until they are elderly.
Porizkova received plenty of praise from her followers for her response. One wrote, "Keep doing exactly what you want and what you are doing! Folks need more role models that celebrate themselves exactly where they are." Another added, "Wow, jealous much. I'm am so inspired by you. Please continue to post pics of your beautiful body. You knock the socks off the young ladies. You are bloody gorgeous."
Porizkova has used her platform to speak about these issues before — and has even dragged commenters who weren't quite so enlightened.
Back in November, she shared a comment from an Instagram user who said Porizkova should spend more time with her family and “stop parading around half naked and acting like a 16 year old." She replied the next day by sharing a nude photo of herself, writing in the caption, "Yesterdays comment of one @jamesorvin Is only important insofar as to highlight the still common belief THAT WOMEN ARE ESSENTIALLY CHATTEL. That once we have stopped breeding, we should be retired to provide nourishment for others. I'm 56 and living my best life. After a lifetime spent taking care of others, I finally get to do ME."
Porizkova, who appeared on the cover of Los Angeles magazine's issue on aging, previously shared an Instagram post highlighting the ways in which the world makes it hard for women to embrace getting older. In July, she posted a pic of herself smiling in a bikini and wrote, Combat age. Reverse aging. Rejuvenate. Anti age. None of this is possible," she wrote. “Yet, if you do an internet search on aging, this is what you'll get. Pills, potions and workouts to fight the aging process. You know what the only way to stop aging? Dying."
She added, "I do not want to fight myself everyday for the rest of my life. But I do want to make the best of what I was given. And I want to shine a bright light in the dark corners of the shame that is heaped on women for daring to age."
