Paying it forward: Coulda made a difference

May we recognize that tomorrow’s opportunity is determined by your intention, purpose and skill today.

“Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda,” laments the gambler after another poor choice. I’ve made a few decisions I’d do differently.  Poor choices abound. One in four suffers from mental health issues at some time during their lives.

If you want others, especially your children, to care about their community, then show them ways to care for one another.  Role modeling is full contact, not passive. Volunteering builds better communities.

With over 200 nonprofits in our community, there is a match with something near and dear to you or your family.

Change your outlook. Start by greeting each person encountered with a smile.  Do at least one act of kindness a day. Increase frequency and see your smile broaden as you greet others. Now, how can I serve?

Learning to serve develops skills while building relationships. Scouting, one of many similar service organizations, strengthens children’s values to our delight.  Numerous nonprofit organizations host summer camps for skills, education and hobby.

Broadening the experiences one has is healthy.  Working and learning with others strengthens our community.

Critters need care and everyone loves ‘em. Animal shelters and PETS Clinic need volunteers. Have great fun with low stress while making a difference.

At Wild Bird Rescue, spring hatches mean lots of baby birds need hands-on care for eventual release back to the wild. Fun way to volunteer with great selfies! Selflessly helping at Wild Bird Rescue is a win–win.

Faith Mission and Faith Refuge help those people needing a meal. Others need shelter and help in recovery. First Step provides safety and security in conjunction with law enforcement and legal experts for those suffering from abuse, domestic violence or sexual assault.

Those giving grow and feel better. Those receiving are confident of their ability to care for their flocks and those helped — person, animal, bird — are better as a result of others' consideration.

Texas today is far different than a generation ago. More people are connected and entertained by mobile devices.  Safety, shelter, food, meaning, respect, happiness and dreams — a list of needs that differing people may enjoy. Experiences are great to bad while advertising encourages near perfection and sets expectations for satisfaction far above reality.

See real life through another person’s eyes. Listen to understand.

Make a difference. Volunteer today.
