People Had a Lot to Say About 'The Voice' Winner
At just 15 years old, Brynn Cartelli of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, became the youngest contestant to ever win The Voice on Tuesday night.
All season long, the young teen was mentored by Kelly Clarkson, who was a first-time coach on the show. Cartelli beat out soul singer Kyla Jade, 33, and folk rocker Britton Buchanan, 18-but not everyone was happy about how the competition played out.
On Twitter, Cartelli's age and young pop star-appeal stirred up a lot of controversy. Some praised the singer for being so talented at such a young age, while others saw her youth as the reason for her win (regardless of her abilities) because it made her more "marketable."
Most of the negative remarks came from fans who thought Jade, who came in third place, should have won. For instance, one tweet that read, "you’re joking if you think Kyla was a 3rd place singer over a 15 year old" got over 200 likes.
Another user echoed those sentiments saying, "#thevoice sucks, just one more pop princess who will put out garbage music if at all."
"I think even Brynn knows that Kyla should have won," another added. "I hope she says so too. It’s the voice not American Hollywood idol."
However, not everyone was upset by the results. Fans of Clarkson gave the inaugural American Idol winner credit for guiding Cartelli throughout the competition and helping her win the show.
"Brynn may be young in age but you can’t take that for granted she’s come a long way to be at The Voice," one user wrote. "She should win just like Kelly did on Idol, the first winner to help another young artist dreams come true."
Despite the criticism, Cartelli has accepted the title of youngest Voice winner with pride. "Found out that i’m the youngest person to ever be in @NBCTheVoice finale.... this is super cool," she wrote on Twitter. "What a dream come true."
