  • James Charles posted a joke about avoiding the draft by dressing up as a woman, and Twitter is pissed.

  • People are calling James’s joke transphobic, and he had to issue a response to the backlash.

It’s been *checks watch* five days since we rang in 2020, and YouTuber James Charles is already on his third scandal of the year, which is truly impressive!

First, on Wednesday, James got into hot water when he filmed himself singing the N-word TWICE in his Instagram Story. James claims he skipped over the word, but you can see for yourself:

And then the next day, James thought it would be a great time to joke about his epic fallout with fellow beauty YouTuber Tati Westbrook. He tweeted, “THIS IS ABOUT TO BE THE BEST COACHELLA YET!!!! no boys or vitamins!!!!!!!! just good music, outfits, photos & memories let’s GOOOO.” And for someone who said the gummy-vitamin drama was so upsetting that he considered self-harm at the time, that seems pretty questionable!

Which brings us to Friday (dear lord, someone send help), when James tweeted a joke about avoiding a potential draft by...dressing up as a woman. Especially considering that James is part of the LGBTQ+ community and that President Trump banned transsexual people from serving in the military, many read the tweet as transphobic.

And of course, people let their thoughts be known, tweeting things like:

James responded to the backlash, writing, “Just to clarify, this tweet has nothing to do with the trans military ban, which I obviously do not support. it’s a lighthearted joke regarding the fact that I had to register for the draft when I turned 18, just like every other boy, & i don’t wanna fight in a war. that’s all.”

On the same day, James also tweeted, “I’m the happiest I’ve been in so long FUCK YEAAHHHH 2020 is off to a good start,” which is not how I read his first few days of 2020, but sure, whatever you say, James!
