Winter may have snow to make angels and snowmen, and summer may have sand to build castles and write messages in, but fall has multicolored leaves and why we hadn’t already figured out that they’re nature’s best medium for creating art is kind of surprising.

We were recently enlightened when several Twitter users in Japan started posting pictures of art made out of fallen leaves. The leaf art-featuring the recognizable faces of Winnie the Pooh Bear and Pikachu-has gone viral (and international). The artists create their work by gathering a large pile of leaves, and then sorting them by color before using the various shades of red, orange, yellow, and brown to create their incredible designs.

We know fall foliage is colorful and beautiful to look at when it’s on the trees, but these pictures are reminding us that leaves continue to be impressive even after they’ve fallen. Just imagine the Instagram-able opportunities. Which, you definitely ought to do since once a strong wind comes through, the art will be long gone. But such is the case with snowmen and sandcastles as well. There’s a lesson in there somewhere about the impermanence of beauty that we should probably dwell on, but for now, we can’t wait to try this with all those leaves we’ve been putting off raking in our yard-and to think, we thought they were only good for jumping in.
