Peter Fonda Apologizes for Barron Trump Tweet
Yesterday afternoon, Peter Fonda apologized for an earlier tweet about President Trump's 12-year-old son Barron that implied that he should be taken away from his parents. He said he's been distraught over what's happening with families at the border, as 2,000 children have been separated from their families.
“I tweeted something highly inappropriate and vulgar about the president and his family in response to the devastating images I was seeing on television,” Fonda told USA Today via a statement.
“Like many Americans, I am very impassioned and distraught over the situation with children separated from their families at the border, but I went way too far. It was wrong and I should not have done it. I immediately regretted it and sincerely apologize to the family for what I said and any hurt my words have caused.”
Early on Wednesday, the 78-year-old actor (and brother of Jane Fonda) wrote that "we should rip Barron Trump from his mother's arms and put him in a cage with pedophiles and see if mother will stand up against the massive (expletive) she is married to." The tweet has since been deleted, but it caused a controversy regardless.
The First Lady's spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, told The Associated Press Fonda's tweet was "sick and irresponsible." And Barron's half-brother Donald Trump Jr. tweeted this response:
After outrage across the country (and the world), Donald Trump Sr. signed an executive order yesterday afternoon to end the policy of family separation at the border, but it's unclear what exactly that means, how it will be implemented, or what will happen to the 2,000 children already taken from their parents.
