Peter Mooney: The Handsome New Hallmark Star You Don't Want to Miss!
Peter Mooney has made a name for himself on the screen over the course of his accomplished career. In fact, you've probably seen his chiseled good looks in a number of beloved shows, having done work on Camelot, as well as guest roles in Wynonna Earp, Heroes Reborn, Republic of Doyle, Heartland, Beauty and the Beast, Played and CSI: Miami.
But Mooney's latest endeavor puts the well-rounded 40-year-old actor on one of our favorite places: The Hallmark Channel. And we can't wait to see him in the new film Retreat to You co-starring Emilie Ullerup on September 23.
Here, we get to know Peter Mooney a bit better — we have a feeling he's going to become one of our favorite Hallmark leading men!
Meet the multi-talented Peter Mooney
Canadian-born Mooney trained as an actor at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People, as well as at the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal, which he graduated from. Some of his earliest credited roles include 2030 CE, The Murdoch Mysteries, Category 7: The End of the World, The Artists and Absolution.
“I’m not sure why, but it was the only thing I ever wanted to do from when I was five," Peter Mooney told Honest Reviews Corner about his dream of acting. "I started doing classes and shows with MTYP, a great local children’s theater, and then as soon as I finished high school, I moved to Montreal to attend the National Theatre School of Canada.”
Peter Mooney's top TV roles
The television role that really put Mooney on the map was the Canadian police drama, Rookie Blue. For Mooney, landing the role Nick Collins from 2012 to 2015 was "a case of very fortunate timing," he told Honest Reviews Corner. "After ‘Camelot’ got cancelled I put myself on tape for it from LA and then I was back in Toronto for a week and went in to meet with David Wellington, Ilana Frank and Tassie Cameron. The read went well and we all got along pretty quickly. Thankfully it all worked out.”
Another of Mooney's most well-known roles include playing Billy Crawford on the popular Canadian legal drama, Burden of Truth from 2018 to 2021. Although his time on the series came to an end, Mooney connected greatly with his character on the popular legal drama. "Billy is so different from other characters I've played. He's someone who is fiercely intelligent but keeps that a well-guarded secret," he told CBS. "He's kind of embarrassed of the capabilities of his own mind. I find any time playing someone with that kind of duality is an exciting thing."
While we love to see his acting skills at work on the screen, Mooney also has some experience as a producer on the indie film We Were Wolves, as well as as a screenwriter for Parachute. What can't he do?
Peter Mooney on stage
In addition to his work on the screen, Mooney has enjoyed great success for his work on the stage across his home of Canada. After Miss Julie, Jitters, Pride and Prejudice, Our Town, The Tempest, Tales From Ovid, The Goat or Who is Sylvia? and Gruesome Playground Injuries are a few of his credited works.
“I love the theatre,” he told Global News. “I love the immediacy of theatre. You get that in television, too, but just for the length of each take. It’s great to be able to do it for two hours straight.”
Making his mark on Hallmark
Newer to the Hallmark family, Mooney's first Hallmark film came in 2022's Fly Away With Me, followed by the anticipated Retreat to You.
Fly Away With Me (2022)
Peter Mooney finds himself alongside actress Natalie Hall in Fly Away With Me. Hall plays Angie, who moves into a new building with a strict "no pets allowed" policy. This policy gets challenged when an unexpected parrot makes its way into her life. Her next door neighbor Ted, played by Peter Mooney, is also breaking this "no pets allowed" policy, as he's secretly dog sitting. The duo come together to try and find the owner of this mystery parrot, all while catching feelings in the process.
Retreat to You (2023)
Peter Mooney stars alongside Emilie Ullerup in Retreat to You. Two high school ex-best friends find their way back to one another in a chance meeting on a wilderness retreat. When the duo find themselves separated from the group, they have no choice but to turn to one another in classic Hallmark movie fashion.
Who is Peter Mooney married to?
Peter Mooney's wife, Sarah Power, just so happens to also be a part of the Hallmark family! You may recognize her from films such as Our Italian Christmas Memories, Nantucket Noel, God Witch, Good Witch: Tale of Two Hearts or Good Witch: Curse From a Rose. Sarah and Peter were married in 2017 and have one child together.
For Power, her work on Good Witch alongside actor Marc Benadavid allowed her work to be something of a family affair. "I've known him for years," Power explained to TV Fanatic in 2020 about Benadvid how happens to be a former classmate of Mooney's. "We met years ago and then he happens to be one of my husband's friends. They went to theater school together, and I still see him all the time here, so having him on set is so much fun. My husband and baby would be in my trailer and Mark would just come to hang out. It's nice. It really added to the family feel of our set."
If you want to get to know Peter Mooney, tune in to Retreat to You on September 23 at 8/7c.
