New Petersburg Event Committee hosting seasonal offerings, including farmers market

PETERSBURG — A new Petersburg organization is bringing seasonal fun to town.

The Petersburg Event Committee began in November. So far, it’s hosted Christmas activities and an Easter Bunny Breakfast. Now it’s offering what may be Petersburg's first-ever farmers market.

The market debuted in May. The second market will be offered from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday in the main parking lot on Center Street, between Saline and Wood streets.

“We chose the main lot on Center Street, since that is where most of the local business are, and it’s the main lot in town,” said Kylie Schroeder, president of the Petersburg Event Committee.

Farmers markets also will be July 27, Aug. 10, Aug. 24, Sept. 7, Sept. 21 and Oct. 5.

“We added and changed some of the dates for the market, due to the high interest of the market and how well the first one did,” Schroeder said.

The first one was held on Memorial Day weekend.

“We believe there was about 75 shoppers that came to the market, which we were pretty happy with, especially since it was a holiday weekend and the first market,” Schroeder said. “We’ve heard all good things from those who came out. The town is happy about having something to look forward to.”

The first market had 24 vendors and one food truck. Saturday’s will be larger.

“We originally had 28 vendor spots and two food truck spots, but we are expanding to the parking lot next to the main lot to add more vendor spots, since we have filled the first lot and have more vendors wanting to be a part of the market. Most of the vendors are local, but we do have some that are from surrounding towns and cities," Schroeder said.

Offered will be items such as handmade soaps, tumblers, metal art, crocheted items, jewelry, homemade bread and treats, glass art, birdhouses, leather items, plants, laser cut wood and dog items. Produce also will be available this time.

"(Saturday's) market, we will be starting to get a few fruits and veggies, as well as honey," Schroeder said. "As the months continue, we will be getting more fruits and veggies from local gardeners and farmers."

A farmers market was suggested to the Petersburg Event Committee by local residents.

“The community came up with the idea for the market and then the idea was brought to us from the city board,” Schroeder said. “There hasn’t been any farmers markets in Petersburg in the past, at least in a long time."

Vendor booths are free, but vendors must bring their own set-up. To register as a vendor, email [email protected]. To learn more about the Petersburg Farmers Market, visit Petersburg Event Committee on Facebook.

The Petersburg Event Committee is planning more events this summer.

The organization will sell rubber ducks for a duck race July 13 at Petersburg Days.

“We also are planning on doing a community movie night in the park, but don’t have a date yet. We are working on getting a screen for it," Schroeder said. "We will also have trunk-or-treat in the fall at the same location as the market; we’re planning on doing a trunk contest with a prize, as well. Christmas in Petersburg will be third weekend in December; the big event will be on Saturday and we may do something that Friday."
